read it the right way
Jan. 7th, 2019 11:04 pmIt took us (me, my brother, and sister), a bit to catch on but once we did, anytime we suspected he was doing this we’d chorus “Daaad, read it the right way!” and so Bilbo had a nice quiet life in the shire until those dwarves showed up, Harry, Ron and Hermione had to run from Flich straight into a three-headed dog and chapters never begun with “it was a dark and stormy night.”
Which was well and good until we started on A Wrinkle in Time. At this point when we'd hear "it was a dark and stormy night" the automatic reaction is, "Daaad read it the right way!", so he did. Or so we thought. I’m re-reading it now for the first time on my own and hey, guess what? It actually starts with, It was a dark and stormy night. I spent ten years thinking we’d pulled one over on my Dad and A Wrinkle in Time started on a sunny day.
Congrats Dad, ya did it.
Weekly Roundup: Week 1
Jan. 6th, 2019 04:22 pmOne of my goals for this year is to post a weekly roundup to keep an eye on my mental health, encourage myself to write at least a little every week, and keep a record of what I'm up to. This is the first of them, hopefully published every sunday from here on out.
What I’m doing: In Mexico, working on my S&R certification, so I can progress to a DM.
What I’m reading: Laurie Penny's column on longreads about sexuality, feminism, and the #metoo movement. They're fantastic reading and I've been devouring them. Start with The Consent of the (Un)governed if you check them out, and work from there.
What I’m listening to: Jay and Miles X-plain the X-Men. I let my queue build up so I’ve got the last 4 episodes to get through. Thankfully I’ve got a fair amount of time on the boat everyday and I find listening to them very grounding.
What I’m watching: The trailer for the kid who would be king on repeat. It’s written and directed by Joe Cornish who directed Attack the Block, which might be my favorite movie of all time. Also I finally got around to watching Annihilation and it's fantastic- the best possible adaptation of the book.
What I’m writing:
- history’s longest suicide note, now written out to chapter 5, 10k of ??
- road song: An AU of AoS season 2 where Skye refuses both the inhumans and shields help and goes on a run. Themed around Richard Siken's Driving, Not Washing. 2.5k out of roughly 10k
- no colors anymore: coda to I see the girls dressed by in their summer clothes. Where we get to see Lex's perspective on Kara's kidnapping. .8k out of 2k.
- an untitled atla/star wars fusion fic where Rey is the avatar and Kylo Ren is not the Zuko friend. 1.4k out of 2k?
Mental Health Check: 5/10. Feeling a little isolated, despite my best efforts. Had a bad moment where I outed myself as a level 9,000 nerd wizard and just watched the entire group shut down. But I'm still up on all my messages and I called my sister this week which is good. Also Brooklyn 99 comes back this week which is gonna be really good for me.
Final Notes: my inner monologue has been pretty heavy on the why can’t you be just a little less autistic and that’s not fair or kind to myself. This year I’m trying to be both those things.
Snowflake Challenge Day 1

Day 1
In your own space, talk about your Happy Place—the things that give you joy, calms you or keeps you sane. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
Hipster cafes are an important part of my routine. I find them calming, the smell of coffee, people coming and going. The best of them mix indoor and outdoor space, and have lots of greenery. I like bringing headphones and writing in them, postcards, fic, essays, whatever. I don’t actually drink coffee, doesn’t mix well with my anti-depressant, but the smell of it brewing has become automatically calming. I drink chai lattes instead and they vary a lot in quality so it’s a bit of an adventure every time. I find they are the easiest place to find the right headspace for writing.
It also gives me a chance to get out of my own head a bit and that’s been really good for me lately.

welcome to this, whatever this is
