Day 14
In your own space, talk about what you think the future holds for fandom. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
I think with the reminder that fandom ecosystems are fragile from tumblr's crackdown, there will be movement to sites that are better protected AO3, Dreamwidth, Mastadon, Pillowfort if they manage to get it up and running in time. I like the reversion to older fandom norms of longform responses and actual engagement and I hope it continues. I like to think we've learned our lessons about how to organize systems so that they are out of reach from monetization/corporate control but if I've learned anything it's that people get complacent when not threatened by the facts.
I hope the trend of diversification in our sources continues, that we continue to build systems that can withstand slings and arrows, I hope that engagement goes up, and the amount of wank goes down but I remain unconvinced. So I'll continue working for those things for as long as I remain in fandom.

Date: 2019-01-16 12:21 pm (UTC)I feel like federated systems would be the safest way for the FPoF moving forward, but there's a long way to go before it has the infrastructure we need.
And I'll drink to engagement going up and wank going down!
Most days I feel like engaging with fandom on mainstream platforms requires at least a shot of vodka to be tolerable.

Date: 2019-01-16 04:32 pm (UTC)Yeah the infrastructure just isn't there now, but I'm hopeful it will be soon and we'll get a non-centralized system up and running.
Some days engaging with fandom at all requires drinking
