Title: more seats reserved for heroes
Fandom: Supergirl
Pairings: Kara Danvers & Clark Kent
Summary: Clark didn’t ask for this, ok? He never does.
Notes: Currently 2nd in the dear forgiveness 'verse. Title from litany in which certain things are crossed out, which incidentally is where the 'verse name came from. This has been mostly written for ages but the latest chapter of history's longest suicide note has been giving me literal actual fits, so I took a look at this guy and finished it up. history's next chapter will finally be posted on this wednesday after I edit it for the nth million time.

Read it on AO3

Day 15
Talk about why you participated in Snowflake &/or what you got out of it. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I'm not actually certain where I first saw the snowflake challenge but after checking it out, seeing the low-pressure format and the active community I said why the hell not and jumped right in. I've met people through it that I never would have otherwise and everybody was so nice and chill! It was lovely to participate in something without feeling the continuous pressure to produce. I'll definitely do it again next year and I want to thank the mods for running such a wonderful experience!

Day 14
In your own space, talk about what you think the future holds for fandom. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I think with the reminder that fandom ecosystems are fragile from tumblr's crackdown, there will be movement to sites that are better protected AO3, Dreamwidth, Mastadon, Pillowfort if they manage to get it up and running in time. I like the reversion to older fandom norms of longform responses and actual engagement and I hope it continues. I like to think we've learned our lessons about how to organize systems so that they  are out of reach from monetization/corporate control but if I've learned anything it's that people get complacent when not threatened by the facts.

I hope the trend of diversification in our sources continues, that we continue to build systems that can withstand slings and arrows, I hope that engagement goes up, and the amount of wank goes down but I remain unconvinced. So I'll continue working for those things for as long as I remain in fandom.

What I’m doing: Finished my search and rescue certification and am taking a week off before I start on the dm program
What I’m reading: How Millennials Became The Burnout Generation. It’s a fascinating look at how we got where we are today, recommended by [personal profile] bluewinged_songbirdAnd a piece by the women who coined the term hopepunk. It's a lovely look at the question what's the point? You can read it here.
What I’m listening to: This collection of protest songs on youtube. Especially Quiet by MILCK which I somehow missed when it first came out.
What I’m watching: Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Good Place! Both are back after hiatuses and as fabulous as ever.
What I'm writing: Not much this week. It wasn't a good one.
Mental Health Check: 3/10.  Self-isolating, had an anxiety attack, fucked up my sleep hygiene, and didn't leave my apartment for two days. Not great.
Final Notes: I wanna get better

Day 13
In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Finish one long fic, publish one of my original works, get better.

Day 12
In your own space, create your own challenge. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

WIP Amnesty! Take a look at a fanwork that you've haven't finished and examine your reasons for not finishing it.

I find there's a lot of works that never get finished with no commentary from the author. I'd love to see a work that's been abandoned or unfinished get a few paragraphs on why that is, or for an author to take a look at their oldest WIP, publish a paragraph from it and write about why they haven't worked on/finished it.

Day 11
In your own space, talk about your creative process(es) — anything from the initial inspiration to how you feel after something’s done. Do you struggle with motivation or is it a smooth process? Do you have any tricks up your sleeve to pull out when a fanwork isn’t cooperating? What is your level of planning to pantsing/winging it? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

So the answer to this for me originally was process, what process? But after a bit of reflection that answer's a bit dated. Prior to getting an adhd diagnosis and getting medicated that was definitely true. Writing was about inspiration more than anything. I would sit down and bang out however many words I could write in one sitting and then tack on an ending, do minor edits, and post.

Since getting medicated my ability to focus on longer term projects has been muuuuuuch better which means I actually to develop a process. Occasionally I'll outline a general idea and plot before starting to write it out but I prefer to play it fast and lose with my writing.

The length of my works has been slowly creeping up and I no longer write everything in just one sitting which requires a different editing process.

I requested a genprompt table from [community profile] genprompt_bingo for Round 15 as a way to get inspired and hopefully write more in the coming months.

Day 10
Create a fanwork. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

As part of my desire to get better at icons I created a gif from a screen capture.

And then parsed it down to four animated icons for [personal profile] bluewinged_songbird who asked for anything with Sypha and magic when i offered.

Day 9
Commit an Act of Kindness. In your own space, share what you’ve done, talk about what you’ve done, or simply leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I went back to Day 6 and have fulfilled a handful of requests for comments and engagement on fic! I'm also going to say to either say nice things about you/your journal or share something that makes me happy if you leave a comment on this post!

Day 8
In your own space, post self-recs for at least three fanworks that you created. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

AKA shameless self-promotion day. SO three fanworks.
  1. history's longest suicide note: Netflix!Castlevania. OT3 fic that ignores episode 8 and also the apocalypse happens. Incomplete. 2/?? published. This is my latest project and one I'm pretty excited about. It's also the single fic I've written the most words for so that's cool.
  2. dear forgiveness,: A Supergirl AU series where Kara is nine years late instead of twenty-five and is raised by the Kents alongside Clark. It's a verse that I have a ton of ideas for and plan on returning to over time and adding to it.
  3. thursday's child: this is a one shot where I codified all my feelings about Skye Daisy Johnson's background and tried to justify the season 3 name switch.

When I was little my dad would read us stories, things that we were still too small to read by ourselves. He’d do the voices of characters, funny little impressions, and when the story was dragging he’d throw in bits like Bilbo Baggins slaying a goblin in the first two chapters of the hobbit or Harry actually dueling Malfoy instead of Malfoy setting Flich on them (which he had to hastily retcon when he figured out it was plot relevant), and when a chapter didn’t suit him he start it with, “It was a dark and stormy night.”

It took us (me, my brother, and sister), a bit to catch on but once we did, anytime we suspected he was doing this we’d chorus “Daaad, read it the right way!” and so Bilbo had a nice quiet life in the shire until those dwarves showed up, Harry, Ron and Hermione had to run from Flich straight into a three-headed dog and chapters never begun with “it was a dark and stormy night.”

Which was well and good until we started on A Wrinkle in Time. At this point when we'd hear "it was a dark and stormy night" the automatic reaction is, "Daaad read it the right way!", so he did. Or so we thought. I’m re-reading it now for the first time on my own and hey, guess what? It actually starts with, It was a dark and stormy night. I spent ten years thinking we’d pulled one over on my Dad and A Wrinkle in Time started on a sunny day.

Congrats Dad, ya did it.

Day 7
Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing. Try working in a new medium. Or check out some fanworks that are new to you. (The recs from Day 2 might be a good place to start.) Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

So I actually spent yesterday doing something entirely new! Because I was dissatisfied by the quality of the Katara icons I could find I was like it can't be that hard to make them. Spoiler: it is and I have a new appreciation of the multi talented artists who create them.

But yesterday I taught myself how to make a gif, and then resize and edit it until it fit dreamwidths size requirements! I've only made 4 so far and they're not great but I want to keep making more.

Check them out-

One of my goals for this year is to post a weekly roundup to keep an eye on my mental health, encourage myself to write at least a little every week, and keep a record of what I'm up to. This is the first of them, hopefully published every sunday from here on out.

What I’m doing:
In Mexico, working on my S&R certification, so I can progress to a DM.
What I’m reading: Laurie Penny's column on longreads about sexuality, feminism, and the #metoo movement. They're fantastic reading and I've been devouring them. Start with The Consent of the (Un)governed if you check them out, and work from there.
What I’m listening to: Jay and Miles X-plain the X-Men. I let my queue build up so I’ve got the last 4 episodes to get through.  Thankfully I’ve got a fair amount of time on the boat everyday and I find listening to them very grounding.
What I’m watching: The trailer for the kid who would be king on repeat. It’s written and directed by Joe Cornish who directed Attack the Block, which might be my favorite movie of all time. Also I finally got around to watching Annihilation and it's fantastic- the best possible adaptation of the book.
What I’m writing:

  • history’s longest suicide note, now written out to chapter 5, 10k of ??
  • road song: An AU of AoS season 2 where Skye refuses both the inhumans and shields help and goes on a run. Themed around Richard Siken's Driving, Not Washing. 2.5k out of roughly 10k
  • no colors anymore: coda to I see the girls dressed by in their summer clothes. Where we get to see Lex's perspective on Kara's kidnapping. .8k out of 2k.
  • an untitled atla/star wars fusion fic where Rey is the avatar and Kylo Ren is not the Zuko friend. 1.4k out of 2k?

Mental Health Check: 5/10. Feeling a little isolated, despite my best efforts. Had a bad moment where I outed myself as a level 9,000 nerd wizard and just watched the entire group shut down. But I'm still up on all my messages and I called my sister this week which is good. Also Brooklyn 99 comes back this week which is gonna be really good for me.
Final Notes: my inner monologue has been pretty heavy on the why can’t you be just a little less autistic and that’s not fair or kind to myself. This year I’m trying to be both those things.

Day 6
In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

1. Book recs! I read far too quickly and am always on the hunt for more. I like pretty much all sci-fi and fantasy and will read just about anything if I'm told it's good. I'm trying to getting away from reading just straight white dudes books so if you have recs by POC, queer people, woman, or some intersection of the three I'd love to hear about them.

2. People to write more Katara centric fic. Katara was the first fictional character I highkey identified with and the one who's fanfic I am consistently the most disappointed in. While there's some really good shipping fic, I can never seem to find Fic where Katara is in character, interesting, and Doing It for Herself. such selfish prayers by andromeda3116 is the only one I can think of and I've been reading the fic since the gd ship wars. So recs for fic like this, and also people to write good Katara fic.

3. I wish people would leave more comments on my fic. It's very frustrating to post and then get no feedback whatsoever. Though I gotta say, moving away from tumblr to dreamwidth has helped that already. So i'm gonna be greedy and say even more comments?

opensummer: Image of yellow books alternating with white books with a sunflower on top (sunflower book)
Day 5
In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

1. The now defunct Apocalyptothon: I'm a big fan of post-apocalypse fic and they challenged a bunch of super talented authors to write it. It's worth going their archive if you're in that sort of thing.

2. Fanlore: because who else is going to give me the juicy deets on stuff that I only half remember?

3. FicFinder: those guys legit are doing Good Work. I tend to read through a bunch of fics all at once, no bookmarks, no way of finding what i've read except a half remembered plot and a fandom maybe. The community there is fantastic and so helpful

Day 4
Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them. Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!"

Done!

Day 3
In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Because this is who I am as a person I jumped immediately to a clip of Agents of SHIELD no more than a minute or two long. In 1x02, Team! Bus has been captured by the enemy and are tied up in the cargo bay awaiting their inevitable deaths cut with Coulson arguing with the leader of the bad guys with whom he has History.

It’s only the second episode so everybody is still poorly defined and the team dynamic hasn’t gelled yet but they have this moment where Skye defines herself to the team (pieces solving a puzzle, this is what I believe in) and Ward quotes Skye back with this little smile and the team dynamics just *clicks* into place, as Melinda May dislocates her wrists to escape

And I was hooked.
